Often I get the question of whether I train active agers any different than their younger counterparts. In short – I don’t. Their programming is based on their fitness level, not their age. Just like their younger counterparts, they possess the potential to move better or be stronger. This population can feel invisible and subjected to ageist ideas that can bleed into the fitness industry by suggesting gentle exercises or a laundry list of exercises they should not do. Nothing is more exciting than working with a group that truly understands the power and value of movement because they have a valuable perspective as to what is really important.
What sets me apart from others, aside from my target population is the writing, speaking, and collaborations I am involved in. I have been working with ACE as a Subject Matter Expert. Currently I am a media contact largely on topics involving active agers and exercise. Also, I am an ongoing contributor for internal projects such as discussing ethical standards for ACE certified professionals or categorizing multiple choice questions in the personal trainer certification exam.
I choose to work primarily with active agers because I enjoy empowering and helping this demographic to make the connection between exercise and daily life. I make a point to explain the connection made between exercise and how it can compliment, if not mirror how active agers use their bodies. It is exciting when they improve in the gym, but even more exciting is hearing the stories of how they can move with more confidence and less pain when doing chores, playing with grandkids or on vacation!
